Living in Shanghai

Both Chinese and foreign residents have described this metropolis in extravagant terms: “Pearl of the Orient”, “Gateway to the World”, “Dragon’s Head”, or “Paris of the East” – nicknames that will make your plan of moving to Shanghai appear even more exciting. Located in the delta of the mighty Yangtze River, approximately equidistant to Beijing and Hong Kong, Shanghai has been growing from a small market town in imperial China to a 21st century megalopolis. Shanghai is a place where soaring sky-scrapers cast shadows on old lane houses, where one-man rickshaws wait for passengers outside the station for one of the world’s fastest trains, and where fine cuisine from around the world and 50 cent fried rice are available on the same street. With the constant interplay of change and development in a historical setting, Shanghai is truly an exciting place to be and lends itself to a vibrant student life in and outside of the classroom. There is always something going on in Shanghai. Foreign artists, scholars, and writers often visit Shanghai to perform or give lectures. Try your hand at bargaining, attend festivals, and celebrate the interesting cultural holidays in the city. This sleepless city has places to explore at all hours.
